San Juan de los Remedios: History and Architecture

San Juan de los Remedios is a dynamic city with its own life and mystical character, endowed with a charm that makes it unique. It has excellent buildings, pleasant walks, lively parks, and valuable monuments. Its unique square, flanked by beautiful flamboyanes trees, is one of its most representative spaces.The most distinctive element of the region is its famous Parrandas, which are attended by people from all over the island and the world. In the city, there is a museum dedicated to this cultural phenomenon: the Parrandas Museum.The irregularity of its streets, together with the wide eaves that protect walkers from the intensity of the sun, creates an environment that invites you to enter the arteries of this centennial city, where time sometimes seems to have stopped, where you can breathe the scent of bricks and old wood; all that charm that surrounds the passer-by, and at any moment the notes of "Tres Danzas Cubanas" or "Berceuse Campesina" by Alejandro García Caturla can resonate in the air. Where the historical, the patrimonial and the everyday are imperceptibly mixed in a magical reality, and a very attractive popular syncretism is enjoyed. All this is what makes this long-lived town sui generis. Despite the distance and the years since my time in Remedios, I continue to profess a deep love for that city. For this reason, I hope this analysis constitutes a modest contribution to the historical research on our rich and genuine cultural past, as well as a recognition of the artistic and historical richness of Cuban architecture.I am pleased to highlight all the grace and splendour of my beloved country.
